Danton scores in return to hockey

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia (AP)—Mike Danton played his first hockey game since beingreleased from prison, scoring a goal in Saint Mary’s University’s 4-1 loss toAcadia on Wednesday night in front of about 2,000 fans at the Halifax Forum.
Danton, the 29-year-old former NHL player convicted in 2004 in amurder-for-hire plot in the United States, was released from prison last March.
The prosecution in the case said the target of the murder plot was DavidFrost, Danton’s agent at the time, but Danton suggested to the National ParoleBoard last year that the intended victim was his father.
Wearing No. 24, Danton jumped over the boards for the first time 2 minutesinto the game, threw a big hit behind the Acadia goal and narrowly missedsetting up a goal.
Danton had a number of chances throughout the game and finally connectedabout 11 minutes into the third period, converting a pass from linemate CamFergus to cut it to 3-1. The crowd gave Danton a standing ovation.
Danton had nine goals, five assists and 182 penalty minutes in 87 NHL gameswith New Jersey and St. Louis. He also had a goal in five playoff games.
He changed his named from Jefferson to Danton while with the Devils afterbecoming estranged from his family.
The Beanpot goes to the ballpark

BOSTON (AP)—Fenway Park is the home of a college hockey doubleheader,including the first outdoor women’s college hockey game in history.
New Hampshire beat Northeastern 5-3 in the women’s game Friday. It wasfollowed by a men’s matchup between Beanpot rivals Boston College and BostonUniversity.
The faceoff for the second game came with a temperature of 21 degrees and awindchill of 12, though the air had cooled to 19 degrees by the second period.Snow flurries were steady early on.
The game comes a week after the NHL’s Winter Classic between the BostonBruins and the Philadelphia Flyers.
